Issue Areas
Agriculture

At BIO PLANET TMC Ltd, we care about farmlands degradation because it affects crop yields’, farmers’ income; leading to food insecurity, unemployment, hunger and poverty. According to UNCCD data, over 2 billion hectares of land are degraded globally, affecting negatively over 3.2 billion people worldwide. In West Africa, over 150 million hectares of land …
Environment & Climate

The hazards of climate change have caused soil erosion due to the presence of intermittent and torrential rains, and rising temperatures, which strips the land of the nutrients that make it fertile in Benin Republic, and West Africa. In research of solutions, farmers rely on chemical fertilizers, which worsen the situation and lead to soil degradation, with over 57% of decline in crop …
Equality & Empowerment

When rural women are empowered and have access to resources they need, we are one step closer to ending hunger and poverty. We empower rural, very low-income women by offering them excellent quality organic fertilizer at cheaper cost and practical training opportunities in agricultural sustainability and women’s right justice. This creates a new world where everyone has the same chance to live and prosper.
Market opportunity

The global fertilizer market size was estimated at USD 202.20 billion in 2023 and is expected to be worth around USD 276.92 billion by 2034. In West Africa, fertilizer demand represents a $2.1bn market, with 3.5m tons in 2022, sold at an average of $600 per ton. In Benin, it represents a $125 million market with a projected increase of up to 20% by 2030, (Trading Economics, 2023).
The fertilizer market in Benin is growing strongly, with an estimated demand of more than 855,950 tons in 2022, increasing by 11% in 2023. However, only 334,720 tons of chemical fertilizers are imported, which is less than 40% of the total demand. Organic fertilizers, while sustainable, remain underrepresented, covering less than 3% of national demand, (DSA, Benin). Local demand in Pobè is high, reaching 35,000 tons per year, but much remains unmet due to high costs, poor quality, and limited access. BIO PLANET TMC Ltd plans to cover up to 30% of the local market, i.e. a production of 10,500 tons per year by 2030, before expanding further to reach other West African countries.

Also, we are happy with their dynamism in empowering rural women for food system sustainability in Pobè, Benin.

Before using the pest control granulated organic fertilizer, my fields were very low in nutrients, and my yields decreased, significantly. This year, thanks to the organic fertilizer provided by the company, I have seen my yields increase by 35%. This allowed me to invest in my children’s education.

I am honored to have known BIO PLANET TMC Ltd in 2023. Their initiative to empower rural women through practical training in Pobè has been really impactful to date. I was able to master good agricultural practices such as techniques for spreading organic fertilizer, crops maintenance and yields conservation. This contributed to an increase in my agricultural income up to 25%.
